Thursday Tapestry: Solopreneurship, Sport and Paws

"Why Not? Thinking about Singapore's Tomorrow." It's a 572-page tome, brought to life by 45 authors - from teenagers to octogenarians.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I recently had an introspective conversation with a client - let’s call him Robert - over steaming cups of chai. He’s at a crossroads, ready to leave his high-paying senior role at MegaCorp (not its real name) and explore the possibility of stepping away from the corporate grind to “do his own thing.”

In my two decades of studying the evolving world of work, I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of individuals—from university students to board directors. What’s striking is the growing trend of people, regardless of age, choosing to forge their own paths and define success on their own terms. It’s not just Gen Zs or retirees who are taking the plunge. I’m seeing a surge of professionals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s—like Robert—embracing solo entrepreneurship and aligning their work with their personal visions.

Solopreneurship: The Next Big Thing

Although relatively nascent in Asia, the rise of the one-person business is undeniable. By 2027, solopreneurs are projected to comprise more than half of the U.S. workforce. The drive for autonomy and flexibility, coupled with advancements in technology like AI, are key factors fueling this trend. Discover more about the rise of the solopreneur here.

Is Going Solo on Your Radar?

Last month, I hinted at a workshop coming this September titled "Me, Myself & My Vision: A Solo Strategy." This is your opportunity to explore whether solopreneurship could be your next step. I’m excited to announce that registration will open soon, but spots are extremely limited. If this piques your interest, make sure to register your interest here and be among the first to secure a spot—once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Taking the First Step

Embarking on a solopreneur journey (or reinvention of any form for that matter) demands more than just talent or luck. It requires resilience and the ability to navigate setbacks. Check out my recent interview with Tatler Asia, where I share lessons learned from sports. And if you’re embracing a new challenge, I’m cheering you on! Taking that first step is a major achievement—just keep moving forward.

A Final Chuckle

Persist, but remember to take time out too.
